Tonight was a wonderful evening with friends I hadn’t seen in a long time. I used to be a little worried about hosting, I am not going to lie. Sometimes you wonder whether your food will be satisfying enough, or if your guests will feel like they are missing out. Being confident in the kitchen, and having more recipes and a better grasp on all the spices and flavours I no longer worry about how much they will enjoy dinner, or if my allergies will be dead obvious! Once I was making tasty dishes, I never worried about others thinking my food was bland and that it would be better if I could eat “X” ingredients.
It is sooo nice to host a dinner, feel safe about what you are eating, and spend quality time with people you care about. I know it is less worrisome for me, and likely for my friends if I make food that I can eat. Then there is no stress at the dinner table and everyone can enjoy themselves without worrying whether there was possible cross-contamination, or if there was an ingredient that they should not have used. Life is way too short to live it with worry or fear.
Many people gather for special events and occasions and there is always bound to be food. Food is something we all share. And I definitely understand that for people with food allergies, this can be scary, but we need to keep things in perspective and go with what we know is safe. There is absolutely no harm in bringing your own dish to a dinner party. Or to cooking your own meat on a different grill. Your friends and family care about you and you should never feel bad about wanting to be safe.
